Tobacco Cessation

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. It leads directly to several of the number-one killers, including heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic respiratory disease. 

Taking steps to kick the habit is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health. If you're thinking about quitting tobacco, consider the following:

  • Prepare now, even if you don't plan to quit immediately. Learn everything you can about preparing to quit, develop strategies to help with cravings and prevent relapses once you stop. One good resource is the Quitting Tobacco page on WebMD, which includes an interactive tool to help you measure your readiness to change.   
      
  • Use other tools available to you. We understand that tobacco use is an addictive habit and it may take several attempts to quit. If you need assistance, there are resources that can help. Several of them are outlined below.

1-800-Quit-Now

Services offered include coaching and counseling, referrals, mailed materials, web-based services, and in some instances, free medications. Click on the link above to find out more about cessation services available in your area.     

 

Blue Cross of Idaho

Online tobacco cessation coaching program available to all Boise Inc. employees and their family members age 18 or older. This online coaching program provides participants an action plan tailored to the participant's unique needs. The program includes personally relevant information and focuses on the individual's specific issues surrounding prior quitting experiences, motivation, self-confidence, habits, barriers, triggers, etc.          

 

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society can provide information on kicking the habit, including educational literature and resources available in your community. Click on the link above or call 800 227 2345.   

 

      Smokefree.gov

Smokefree.gov provides free, accurate, evidence-based information and professional assistance to help support the immediate and long-term needs of people trying to quit smoking.

 

Freedom From Smoking® Online

The American Lung Association (ALA) offers this online cessation tool to help tobacco users quit. You must have an account on the site in order to utilize the services available. Registration is free. 

 

Tobacco users can also utilize the ALA’s Lung HelpLine at 1-800-LUNGUSA. The call center is staffed by registered nurses and registered respiratory therapists that can assist callers in a variety of areas, including tobacco cessation.
