Environmental choices for flexible packaging applications
Paper made from wood fiber is a sustainable substrate choice for your flexible packaging needs. It is difficult for other substrates to match the combination of cost efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability of paper. Paper is made from a renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable resource (wood), and is recyclable and biodegradable. Paper also has a higher recovery rate than other substrate choices, such as plastics, which makes it a great choice for initiating a sustainable lifecycle. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2006, 56% of the paper used in the United States for containers and packaging was recovered from the waste stream for recycling. This compares to an 11% recovery rate for plastics.* In addition, Boise EcoOGR product is manufactured at a facility which utilizes wind power as an energy source.
Determine the sustainability attributes your customers want
In an effort to optimize sustainability in product design, Boise has been guided by market research in the pressure sensitive industry which generated the following insights:**
- Recycled fiber content and chain of custody certifications are the two most cited attributes industry participants plan to include in sustainability action plans
- Flexible Packaging converters, package designers and brand owners are relatively indifferent to chain of custody certification type
- When sustainability attributes are added to products, brand owners and packaging designers exhibit an increase in purchase probability twice that of the flexible packaging converters indicating the opportunity to fulfill an unmet need
