Sustainability
We balance all the facets of sustainability – a commitment that guides our social, environmental, and business actions.
We aim to serve our customers and provide returns to our investors. We do this by working safely, enhancing the communities where we operate, using natural resources intelligently, and taking a stand to improve the global environment.
Employee ingenuity figures prominently in our commitment to sustainability. Our people constantly develop more effective and environmentally responsible ways to make our products. And it is our people who developed our Stewardship Principle:
We manage our businesses to sustain environmental resources for future generations.

Pride. Passion. Participation
In 2008, employees achieved our best-ever safety incident rate.
Independent verification
We hold a variety of credible, independent, third-party certifications that represent our support of sustainably managed forests.
Voluntary commitments
Boise Inc. is a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange® (CCX), the world's first and North America's only voluntary, legally binding greenhouse gas emissions reduction, registry, and trading system. Our commitment is to achieve by the end of 2010 an absolute greenhouse gas emission reduction of 6% below our companywide baseline – a four-year average of the years 1998-2001. Our goal is to capture greater value from our greenhouse gas emission reductions by being able to sell surplus allowances.
We've also pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 10% by 2014, a goal we set in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders partnership.
Sharing knowledge and opportunities
There's never a shortage of Boise Inc. employees to share their enthusiasm for our industry and with the next generation.
The people of Boise Inc. are sharing their knowledge in their communities: From our all-volunteer Timber Talk Team at the International Falls, Minnesota, paper mill; to hosting Boy Scouts troops for papermaking classes at the DeRidder, Louisiana, mill.
Intelligent investments
Our $85 million conversion on our W-3 paper machine enables us to produce label and release papers, which are consumed in packaging applications.
