At Boise Inc., we undergo independent third-party audits to assure our procurement , chain-of-custody, and environmental management systems comply with the certification standards we participate in. We also audit our own facilities every three to five years to assure they are complying with governmental and our own environmental regulations.
Procurement Audits
To assess our sustainable environmental performance, an independent third party audits our wood fiber procurement practices against Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) and our internal standards.
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP audited our wood procurement system and found our procurement practices to be in full compliance with SFI standards. Audits are performed on an ongoing basis to ensure that we in compliance and that we are continuing to improve our environmental management practices.
ISO 14001 Audits
ISO 14001 is recognized as the leading standard for environmental management systems and demonstrates environmental stewardship to our stakeholders.
Certification is a thorough process. Auditors review an organization's implementation of environmental policy, planning, operational control, monitoring, and management review. Auditors verify that the facility environmental policy is understood at all levels of the organization.
Chain-of-Custody Audits
To add transparency and enhanced credibility for our customers, we have completed independent third-party chain-of-custody audits against:
- Sustainable Forestry Initiative® Program Annex 2 Chain-of-Custody Standard.
- Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification SchemesTM Annex 4; Chain-of Custody of Forest Based Products Requirements Standard.
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSCTM) from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program.
Boise Inc. Manufacturing Audits
To assess our sustainable manufacturing performance, our environmental experts audit each of our manufacturing facilities every three to five years. In addition, an independent company periodically evaluates our audit program to ensure its conformance to recognized environmental auditing practices.
